The measure asks if voters want to repeal the bill signed into law in May that allows same-sex couples to receive the full benefits of legal marriage, while at the same time allowing organizations who do not want to perform ceremonies for gay couples to do so without fear of recrimination. If this measure fails today, Maine will become the first state to uphold same-sex marriage by popular vote.

Unfortunately, the polls show the two sides to be in a statistical dead heat at the moment, so the rest of the day should prove interesting.

Discuss.

I'm all for gay marriage. Everyone has the right to love someone regardless of their gender.

It'd be a big step in the right direction. I'm all for it.
EDIT: Just read that and I kinda phrased it wierdly. I hope that gay marriage remains legalised, because thats the right direction. Just to clarify. k

Now I'll finally be able to marry a moose in Maine.

What's weird is that I thought Maine was already one of the gay marriage states. Anyways, yay for gay.

It is, but those who oppose it (which I guess is just my nicer way of saying "bigots") got enough signatures to place the repeal measure on the ballot.

Jeez, who the hell puts that much effort into a petition just to take a right away from people (who they more than likely dont know) who completely deserve it.
Why was it even entertained? If I had a petition to bring back slavery do you think they'd take it seriously for even a moment?

D'oh! I walked into the topic without reading.

Not referring to everyone in the state of Maine, but every time I go up there, I keep meeting people that would do this. >_>

Slavery has been constitutionally banned with an amendment, so it's completely different than what this is. Slavery could technically be reinstated, but none of the senators and congressmen responsible would be reelected, so that won't happen.

Yeah, the moment you favor slavery, you're basically committing political suicide. Besides, we don't need slavery. We already have internships.

This made me think about how mundane my internship with the government is, then suddenly work like no tomorrow right as I'm about to leave. I think I'll have to agree with you.

Slavery's anachronistic, anyway. Hell, it was anachronistic back when it was still legal, too. Immigrants were a much more cost effective labor force. >.>

Pretty much the same for the art world. Big companies here don't pay you for internships in commercials/game design/TV here other than reimbursement for metro cards. You get paid at smaller companies and on a staff job, you get paid much much more money than you would at Pixar or Dreamworks. Those giants are smart enough to know that they could pay you slave wages (if at all) simply because workers like me strive to get that sparkly big name on our resume.

Blizzard not only pays their interns but covers their housing for the few weeks : 0

Oh man, I've heard so much bad rep from Blizzard. From what I heard from interns, they mentioned the pay was pay, it kept you alive. I vaguely heard about housing. But with most companies, once you created whatever the client demands, it's also suggested to come up with an art piece on what you think the project should look like. It just gives you a sense of creativity and makes you look trustworthy to the client. But with Blizzard, I heard it was nothing, but "get this model done and the way it looks exactly in the sketches". There were also moments where they didn't really look at you and when talking to them, it was like talking to a wall.

Well, this is SVA's view. Hopefully, people will have better luck.

Pay is pay, I mean there are companies who laugh at the thought of paying interns. Two of the guys in my game team right now interned for Chronic Logic unpaid and all they did was mostly debugging. You can probably expect crap treatment from most large game studios, but I believe I heard interning at Blizzard is practically a guaranteed job there once you graduate. Hell, I bet anyone will take you if you have "interned at Blizzard, you know that one ridiculously successful company raking in all the doe right now?" on your resume. They only take about 25 interns every summer so yea.

Ever get the feeling there's a negative vibe between game programmers and artists? : p

I hope this measure fails, gay marriage is a stupid thing to try and ban.

Were these the results of the poll, with "no" being "keep gay marriage legal"?

If so, cool.

Unfortunately, that was when I was watching TV and the voting was still in progress. So I'm not sure. And yep, no means 'don't repeal the gay marriage bill'.
